Worldwide Development of Palliative Care 1 Year, 1 Month ago
Palliative care for children has been slow in developing in most parts of the world, and there are many challenges to the development of this discipline. What in your view are the challenges to the development of children’s palliative care and have you any suggestions to overcoming these challenges?

Very few health personnel who have knowledge and skills of Palliative Care , alot of remote areas do not have facilities to set up the facilities like accomodation and most of the personnel depend on voluntary basis as they do not have enough funds set up such structures.

These challenges can be overcome by:
1 Encouraging more people to be trained in Palliative Care for Children.
2 More funds should be provided to those who are interested in getting involved in Palliative Care for Children.

Looking at this problem from a "parent of a terminally-ill child or a child with a life-limiting illness" I find that in most cases the parent does not want to even entertain the idea of thinking about palliative care...."my child can't possibly be the one to die"and "ïf we talk about it it might in fact happen"
Do these attitudes in fact filter down to the medical team as well?
We are always there to CURE and have we, therefore, subconsciously blocked the need for this discipline?
Education, Education, education! If we as a nation were more open to discussion and education about the big D word , where death and dying are part of our everyday "speak" (because the facts are that death and dying are a huge reality in our nation anyway!) would we not more easily embrace palliative care? So education starting at a school level is what I propose.

Challenge:Health professionals often feel that they have to achieve a curative outcome and feel helpless if this is not attainable.
To overcome this just opening our eyes to the difference a few simple things such as touch ,warmth and an empathic attitude can make can empower us to realise that what we may already be doing is important and useful even if not curative. So definitely more ppc education!!

In the developing world there is still a lot of ignorance re palliative care even amongst the medical profession.
They should be educted first before the concept of palliative and not curative care can be embraced.

In the developing countries, due to the slow economic growth and poverty, professionals seem to care more about their wellbeings as adults hence children become neglected.Paedriatic Palliative care is not receiving much attention due to lack of knowledge on issues that affect children and accerbated by the fact that , views of children are not recognized, their voices are not heard. Moreover, there is lack of funding to educate professionals about paedriatic palliative care evidenced by the absence of curriculums on paedriatic palliative care in most syllabuses that concern children's care, for example, social work and nursing.
[ul]If profeesional advocate for inclusion of syllabuses on paedriatic palliative care in social work, nursing and medicine school curriculums, then more people will be aware of the need to practice paedriatic palliative care.YOU CANNOT PRACTICE WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW.
